When you go to your parents’ house for dinner, there’s some things you always expect to see on the table.
For my family, it’s steamed artichokes and dip.
It’s placed in the center of the table for everyone to nosh while we visit and wait for dinner.
As a result, I brought that same appetizer dish to my house.
But that was before we went plant-based.
I mourned the loss of the dish after that.
Until I figured out how to veganize it!
This vegan appetizer is a favorite in our house. Two of my kids love artichokes because of it. But before we share how we make our vegan artichoke dipping sauce, let’s start with the best part of this dish: the artichoke! 👇👇👇

Let’s get the steamed artichokes juuuust right
Before steaming the artichokes, I use a knife and cut the stem and then cut about an inch off of the top. Then I use sharp scissors to cut the pointy tips off of the leaves. I rinse the artichoke with water to get dirt out from between the leaves. If I have a lemon on hand, I cut it in half and rub it on the top of the artichoke. It keeps the ends a little more green but it isn’t necessary.
I fill a large pot with water to just below the steamer pot. I place the artichokes in a single layer on the steamer basket or pot. I’ve tried putting them in stem-side down and up and I don’t notice a difference. I steam for 45-60 minutes or until I can easily pull the leaves off of the steamed artichokes.
While the artichokes steam, let’s get to the other half of this vegan appetizer!
Now for the vegan artichoke dipping sauce
What made this dip not vegan was the mayo and Worcestershire sauce. (Mayo lists egg as an ingredient and most Worcestershire sauces include anchovies or fish sauce.)
So I adapted the recipe by using Follow Your Heart’s Vegenaise. Best Foods has a vegan mayonnaise you can find in most grocery stores and even Target. So use whatever you can find. Next, I found a vegan Worcestershire sauce. I like Annie’s Organic Worcestershire Sauce but I’ve heard Kroger has a vegan version as well.
If you have really large artichokes, or heavy dippers (like my kids), you can increase the recipe so it makes more. But the amount listed works for our family of 5.
We love this dip because it’s creamy, smooth and packs a savory bite with the soft meat of the artichoke.
This vegan artichoke recipe is deliciously addicting and keeps us coming back for more!
A vegan appetizer worth sharing (or not!)
As I mentioned earlier, we expect to see these steamed artichokes and the dipping sauce at our family gatherings. They make a great starter before the meal. And at our house, we often share it before sitting down to enjoy one of our vegan family dinners.
Buuuut, in our house, we joke that when these are on the table, it’s hard to share! I think I could make one for each of us and call it a meal!

Yum! Simple but delish!!
Steamed artichokes with aioli dip is a routine item at our house. When the kids were adolescents, their friends always wanted to come to our house for the artichokes – they had never heard of them, much less tried them.
They were expensive then…now, they’re so cheap! We get them for $1 each!
Wow Suz, $1 for an artichoke is a great price! Thanks for sharing your story! I love that our kids enjoy these too!

This sounds amazing! We LOVE artichokes in our house too. Usually, we just bake ours with some salt and olive oil… but this would definitely be something we could try! And the fact that it has no dairy, is a definite bonus for me!
